The Ferrari 512 S was developed to challenge Porsche for outright honors in the World Sportscar Championship. Powered by a formidable 5.0-liter V12, the 512 S became one of the defining endurance racing machines of the early 1970s and a fierce rival to the Porsche 917.

At Le Mans in 1970, Ferrari entered a strong contingent of 512 S machines against Porsche’s dominant 917s. The No. 5 car, piloted by Ferrari stars Jacky Ickx and Peter Schetty, showed impressive pace but was ultimately forced to retire from the rain-soaked race following an accident.
